Artist Statement
I trust my imagination and the process of painting. I feel, I express, I touch responding to it's sensual nature and acknowledging it's underlying purpose.
My work is intensely personal. It is centered around the individual as a whole entity and is meant to be emotionally engaging. My body of work is an expression of two natural elements co-existing in space with one another. I am inspired to take both anatomical and organic forms and weave them together against a backdrop of color and emotion. I rely solely on my intuition when I create a painting. My intention is to choose an event in my life that has impacted me and then create an ambiguous environment for the forms that represent my ideas to occupy that space. This is either done with wide areas of flat color of a cluster of heavier textures and lustrous glazing. When the surfaces are built up, other imagery is introduced to create relationship dynamics.
My passion to explore the emotional expression and direct interpretation of life and the energy around us is the source of inspiration for my paintings. The experiences I have while I am in the process of creating art have become so much of who I am. The dissecting of the layers in an organic form are so closely related to the unfolding layers of my own conditioning. The discovery is unique and the translation distinct every time.
Every stroke of paint on the canvas brings to life an experience. The styles that I embrace are a language that I use to tell my story. Texture represents my emotional connection to past events. Glazing signifies the harmony between the past and the present and the underlying truths and the impression left behind. I scrap away at the surface to evoke passion and to find my center. Thick impasto palette knife painting is used when I speak about intention, and the edges of a line remind us of our own fragility.
Overall I would say that form and color are the catalyst for my emotion and intuition and the events in my life are staring right back at you.
